5 Tips For Forming Healthy Habits
Forming a new habit can be quite the challenge but can also allow for you to make great changes in your life and provide you with the stepping stones to reaching your goals!
Here are some steps to help you form healthy habits that will bring you closer to success starting today!
Follow the 21/90 rule: Experts say it takes 21 days to form a habit and 90 days to make it a lifestyle. For example, if you start doing yoga every morning when you wake up, try it for 21 days and once it becomes habitual, reach for the 90 day mark to permanently keep it in your routine.
Seek Support: Forming healthy habits is something that starts within, but having external support from loved ones is key to optimal success. Make sure you tell your partner, family and friends about your new habit so they can support you and cheer you on through your journey.
Select habits that bring you closer to your broader goals: Working towards a big goal can be overwhelming but breaking it into tiny daily habits is what will bring you closer to success. For example, if your goal is to run a marathon, you can reach that big goal with small habits such as jogging each morning (increasing length overtime), adding more calories into your diet in small bits to support your increased needs and stretching at night before bed.
Be your own biggest cheerleader: This may sound cheesy but cheer yourself on! Encourage yourself in every way possible, treat yourself when you reach your goals, put post-it notes around your home with messages of encouragement, you can do it!
Don’t get discouraged if you need to start over: Sometimes when we break our new habits or fall off course we tend to feel discouraged and it leads to quitting. It is okay to fall off the horse, as long as you dust yourself off and hop right back on! Life will throw its curve balls but if you keep your eye on the prize and get up when you’re down, you are already way ahead of the game!
